Cultural Orgs

Downtown Jamaica is served by a rich fabric of cultural organizations. These institutions provide the backbone of the local arts community and are vital in maintaining Jamaica's distinct character. For more information click on the links below to visit the organization's own website.

Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, is a non-profit organization that offers visual, performing and literary arts, arts education and artists' programs to encourage participation in the arts and to contribute to the cultural enrichment of Queens and the Greater Metropolitan area.

York College of CUNY, As a senior college of The City University of New York, York College is committed to the University mission of "teaching, research, and public service" responsive to "the special needs of an urban constituency." York College's Performing Arts Center is one of the finest state-of-the-art facilities in New York City and features a 1,437 seat Main Stage theater and a 152 seat Little Theater.

Afrikan Poetry Theater is a 28 year old cultural and educational center that puts on numerous jazz, open mic, spoken word/poetry, educational, and social programs. Afrikan Poetry Theater also runs an extensive youth outreach program.

King Manor Museum is the centerpiece of the 11-acre King Park in Downtown Jamaica. The Museum was the home of Rufus King from 1805-1827. Rufus King was an author of the U.S. Constitution, as well as one of New York's first U.S. Senators, Ambassador to Great Britain and an early and outspoken opponent of slavery. The Manor has been a museum since 1900 and provides an acurate depiction of life in the 1800s.

Queens Library, Central Branch As the central branch for the Queens Library, the system serves a population of 2.2 million in the most ethnically diverse county in the United States. With a record 21 million items in circulation for Fiscal Year 2007, the Library has the highest circulation of any public library system in the U.S. and one of the highest circulations in the world. Black Spectrum Theatre, founded in 1970, produces and presents theatre, films, and videos examining issues of concern to the African-American community, particularly African-American youth.  Its 325-seat state-of-art theatre serves more than 20,000 audience members annually. They reach many thousands more through thier nationally distributed social issue video series, tours and workshops for underserved communities.

Its Dance School of Performing Arts, is located in the heart of Jamaica, Queens. We offer classes in ballet, modern, jazz, tap, African, hip hop and drama to all students from ages 3-up. Each year our students are given the opportunity to showcase their talents and all they have learned in our annual June Dance Recital. Leap into dance with It's Dance.
