Jamaica is the current and historical cultural, commercial, shopping, transportation, and legal center of Eastern Queens. Founded in the 1660s Jamaica has been home to prominent public figures like US Constitution Framer Rufus King and former New York Governor Mario Cuomo as well as famous musicians like Illinois Jacquet, Lena Horn, LL Cool J, Jam Master Jay, A Tribe Called Quest, and 50 Cent.
Today Downtown Jamaica is a vibrant community with many cultural organizations offering a variety of arts programing; dozens of independent Urban, Latin, and South Asian record stores; one of the few places left in NYC where you can bargain with local merchants; and a destination for the creative community.
Residents, visitors, workers, and all users of Downtown Jamaica come explore this site to see all that is happening here. If you don't find it, we are here to serve; email us at info@jamaicafunk.org
